Recently I've had a couple kids ask me about high school and college and I don't think I've made a post soley on this stuff, so I decided to do so now. Maybe I have made this post... I dunno XD So, this might be a little jumbled and out of order but I'll try to keep it coherent XD
The first thing I'd say to kids entering high school soon (in the US anyway) is have fun, but not too much. I feel like most high school kids take high school one of two ways: too seriously or not seriously enough. Some kids either by their own will or through the pressure of someone else, try so hard to get amazing grades in high school and try to hold every "office" or club president role. And then others flunk out or don't even try and do drugs and drink and party all the time. And frankly, while I think its ok to be smart and to do your best, you don't need to be at either extreme. It doesn't help that TV and movies portray high school as a life or death situation in social status. Now, I did go to quite a small school, about one hundred students per grade and a lot of kids were from private schools, like me, or home schooled. So, in a way, we already started out with a "good bunch". But that doesn't mean we didn't have the crazies too. So, I don't personally have an amazingly dramatic tale of high school, but I think that, since I didn't, I can tell you, its possible to have a good high school experience and to go without drama and without boy problems (or girl problems) and the other petty things that high school supposedly is full of.
So, pertaining to that "have fun" bit, I mostly mean, don't stress out about high school. A lot of kids stress out about their grades and their GPA, but honestly, in terms of college, your high school grades only matter if you are an entering freshman at a Four Year University. And what I mean by that is that if you decide to go to a Community College or something for a couple years and then transfer, no one cares about high school! Once you've been at your University for even a semester your high school grades don't count! You don't get any special treatment in college from your high school grades except when you are applying to Universities. And on that note, you don't have to have a 4.0 or higher to get into schools. Entering as a Freshman has a lot of variables like SAT or ACT scores, extracurriculars, your application essay, and even your ethnicity and whether you are in or out of state. Cause colleges have quotas too! XD And bills to pay, they like that out of state money. So yeah, your grades might get you through the door, but honestly, I don't think its worth it to stress out about grades when they don't mean much in the grand scheme of things.
As for not having too much fun, I mean, don't drink, don't do drugs, don't have sex with random "hot" guys, don't get into trouble and don't be stupid with your new car when you get a drivers license. If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you know I'm not the type to say "you do you" I'm the type to be the big sister that butts into your life and tries to prevent you from doing stupid things that might ruin more than just high school for you. Drinking, other than the fact that in the US you have to be 21, is bad for your body. Alcohol is hard on your body and your mind and it might seem fun, but it can go wrong very quickly. If you can stay away from alcohol for your entire life, I promise, you will not be missing out on much and your liver will thank you. Drugs are just as bad. Some of them are clearly worse than others, but frankly, I say stay away from it all because no matter what you take, its alters your mind and does affect your body negatively. I know weed and vaping and stuff if popular right now, and people think its not that bad, but when your brain is still developing messing with it in any way is a very, very bad idea. And even something like a joint here and there is gonna screw with you. Now, drinking and drugs aren't just bad choices, but if you're still in high school its ILLEGAL! And getting caught with either or both are gonna go on your record and its going to affect your for years to come! So don't do it!!!
As for sex, come on. Don't give me the bull shit about raging hormones or "but we're in love". You can control your actions and love, is not a feeling, love is action (not sex) and self sacrifice, not just a word to throw around when you get butterflies in your stomach. Now, ya'll know I'm also a Christian, so you probably have an idea about all the religious things I'd say too. And I know everyone hates being told what not to do, but honestly, its for your good. It really is! Maybe one day I'll go into it more, but in the mean time there are plenty of Christian speakers and bloggers that have already covered it. Just don't do it!
As for cars, don't be an asshole 16 year old who just got their license. Drive the speed limit, obey the laws and don't text and drive! Just be safe, because you are now in control of a speeding vehicle that weighs a ton! Not all cars literally weigh a ton, but you get it. Don't be that kid that dies every year from doing something stupid while driving. You can't help what others do, but you are responsible for your own actions. And any mistake you do make, also goes on your record and will affect your for many years to come.
I know this has been a lot of "do nots" but honestly, there are way more "do's" than "do nots". I just focused on those first because I think its better to air on the side of caution and play it safe and to literally keep thinking "What Would Jesus Do".
I'm gonna end it here for now though, cause its getting late for me. So, if anyone has any questions they'd like to ask me for advice, go ahead. Hopefully I can write another one of these soon with more than just "don't do this cause its bad" XD But seriously, all in all, do your best in school, but don't be presssured into having to get the best grades or be the class president every year. Have fun with sports and friends but have legal and God approved fun XD Cause remember, He's always watching 0_o But He want's the best for you, so don't be scared of God, but just do what's right in the first place XD Yeah... I'm tired. Good night! Toodles! ;P
Very well said :)) We can totally still enjoy schooling life while having certain limits and morals
